wholly organic, yet synthetic creation

I've been thinking about androids and what that all entails. I've always wondered what makes us human. As science progresses through the decades and we are touching on the borders of creating life. Now I know some novels, definitions, etc differ on what an android is exactly. For me it is a fully synthetic yet organic being. No cybernetic or technological parts whatsoever. A test tube human if you will. When will these things become mainstream? An everyday occurrence? I say "when" because no doubt is in my mind "if" it will happen.

Do you consider an android human? Do they have a ghost or a soul? And if so what even constitutes a soul? Are machines alive or can they become aware? What constitutes life is always being redefined and challenged. Not long ago viruses were challenged and they are bordering from supra molecular complexes and very simple biological entities.

I guess this raises more questions than answers but it is something I am always thinking about and I'm excited by these questions that may not yet have answers.
